Phil Hersey reports.
There were so many familiar aspects to this event. The HQ was the Metropolitan Police Social club in Chigwell where we have our club dinner. The course was around Toot Hill and Mount End and included part of our evening 10 course. The course was pot-holed, bumpy, hilly in parts and narrow. Only the Met Police could run an event like this - we were surrounded by Police vans, motorbikes and numerous marshals in what felt more like the Tour of Britain than the ERRL. Four Eagles were on the start line - Phil, Damian, Chris and Ben.
The race started, as these races often do, with a couple of riders off the front early on, chancing their arm, but they were chased down after about 1/2 a lap away. Several riders attempted to get away but didn't succeed and the pace was fairly steady for the first couple of laps. Both Phil and Chris managed to eject water bottles on different pot holes, fortunately with no damage done to the following riders. On the third lap, Phil upped the pace to string the bunch out on the road from Toot Hill to Mount End. Chris was on his wheel and attacked when he ran out of steam. Nobody followed Chris, so he had a long hard 15 mile time trial to the finish. Once Chris was away, Damian and Phil were managing the pace at the front of the bunch and chasing down any attacks. In the end Chris crossed the line about a minute ahead of the bunch. Ben's job was to pace himself in and with any luck pick up the 8 points he needs for his 2nd cat license, but his typical bunch sprint heroics didn't quite get him through the group. In the end Chris crossed the line about a minute ahead of the bunch for a well deserved victory.
